In a collection of handcrafted postcards, Steiner invites the reader on her journey to understanding herself, her emotions, and the path she is carving out of life with her own words and ink creations. Strokes of intertwining black ink expand thoughts and emotions expressed by words on the back of postcards. Her drawings contrast black and white, representing the idyllic dream of yes or no answers the world demands, but her designs hint at something else. A mess of gray. A gray that has to be faced and dealt with and processed, but that gray creates beauty and self-expression as art and a path to healing. In a world that demands finite answers, Steiner challenges the norm with her art to show how some things can’t be explained. Her words shed moments of abandonment, despair, dread, hope, elation, and happiness, but her underlying message seeks out vulnerability and the need for openness as a way to heal, whether that be physical or mental pain. The raw and unapologetic self-reflections show that where pain and beauty meet, are stories told with ink.
